Our Green Initiatives
Story
"The miracle is not to walk on water. The miracle is to walk on the green earth, dwelling deeply in the present moment and feeling truly alive."
~Thich Nhat Hanh, Sounds True author and Zen master
At Sounds True, we are committed to being a force for awakening in the world. We could not be true to this goal without paying attention to the impact we as a publishing company have on the health and balance of our planet. To this end, we strive to minimize the environmental footprint of our company. What follows are initiatives we have taken at Sounds True, as well as contact information, should you choose to join us in these efforts. Additionally, if you have other ideas about how we can go green, we’d love to hear from you.
100 Percent Wind Power and Other Important Initiatives
We offset the energy we use at our warehouse and corporate offices with 100 percent wind power. There are many options for buying renewable energy; we use www.renewablechoice.com. Employees earn time off for using alternative transportation to get to work—such as carpooling, biking, or public transit. Paper, plastic, and aluminum are recycled, and we turn off the lights in rooms that we are not using to help conserve energy. To find out more about how you can help reduce your carbon footprint, visit www.epa.gov/climatechange/wycd.
Member of the Green Press Initiative
We are members of the Green Press Initiative and strive to adhere to their standards, which conserve our natural resources and support the preservation of endangered forests. For more information, please visit www.greenpressinitiative.org.
Top Vendors Certified by the Forest Stewardship Council
Two of our major vendors are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, an organization that sets standards for managing forests for sustainable outcomes. Visit www.fscus.org for more information.
Products Go Green
Nearly all of our books are printed on chlorine-free paper made from 100 percent post-consumer waste and bound using non-hazardous glue. The paperboard in our audio packaging includes 30 percent post-consumer waste and is processed without chlorine. Our catalogs are printed on 80 – 95% recycled paper. You can learn more about choosing products made from recycled goods by visiting www.epa.gov or your local government website.
Sustainable Partnership
We are a participating member of the LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) community, an organization of companies who practice responsible capitalism by providing goods and services using economic and environmentally sustainable practices. Visit them on the web at www.lohas.com.
We also support ISPA (International Spa Association) in their endeavor to encourage conscious business and eco-friendly practices in spas worldwide. Please visit www.experienceispa.com for more information.
